Babli Gates: Babli Gates in Maharashtra are going to be opened tomorrow

Officials said that the Babli Gatesbuilt in Maharashtra on the Godavari Riverwill be officially lifted tomorrow (July 1). As per the Supreme Court order, the Babli Gates have to be lifted and kept open from July 1 to October 28 every year. To this extent, arrangements have been completed this time too to lift 14 gates. With this, water will flow from Maharashtra and enter the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) in Telangana.

Godavari flood water likely to reach SRSP

With the lifting of Babli gates, the Godavari flood will enter Telangana. Currently, the water level in SRSP is 1,064 feet. The total storage capacity is 90.3 TMC, and currently 15.567 TMC of water is stored. Officials estimate that the water level in the project is likely to increase rapidly due to the possibility of Godavari flood water coming in with the onset of the monsoon season.

Benefit for Telangana farmers Irrigation water assurance

The lifting of Babli gates is likely to help in the supply of drinking water and irrigation water to the Sriram Sagar project. As flood water from upstream is stored in the reservoir, there is a possibility of increasing the security of irrigation water for kharif crops. This will provide relief to farmers in Peddapalli, Nizamabad and Jagtial districts of Telangana. The authorities are continuously monitoring the water control.
