The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday resolved to observe the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of Emergency. The Cabinet paid tribute to the countless citizens who bravely stood up against the repressive regime of Emergency and its attempt to suppress the essence of the Indian Constitution. Acknowledging that the erosion of democratic principles had begun in 1974 itself with the crackdown on the Navnirman Movement and the Total Revolution Campaign, the Cabinet also observed two minutes of silence during its meeting on Wednesday.

International Potato Centre in Agra: A unique step in the field of agriculture

Apart from commemorating this historic milestone, the Cabinet also approved several impressive development initiatives. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced three important decisions taken during the session. Revised Jharia Master Plan: Addressing the long-standing problem of underground coal fire in Jharia, Jharkhand, a revised plan worth Rs 5,940 crore was approved to provide relief to the affected communities and restore environmental balance. International Potato Centre in Agra: In a unique move in the field of agriculture, the Cabinet approved Rs 111 crore for setting up the International Potato Centre in Agra. The move is expected to boost innovation and productivity in potato cultivation across the country.

50 years of Constitution Assassination Day

Vaishnaw said the year 2025 will mark 50 years of Constitution Hatya Diwas an unforgettable chapter in India's history where the Constitution was destroyed, the republican and democratic spirit of India was attacked, federalism was undermined and fundamental rights, human liberty and dignity were suspended.

Establishment of International Potato Centre approved

Ashwini Vaishnav informed that the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to establish the South Asia Regional Center (CSARC) of the International Potato Center (CIP) in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The main objective of this investment is to increase food and nutrition security, farmers' income and employment generation by improving the productivity, post-harvest management and value addition of potato and sweet potato.

Pune Metro Rail project's second phase gets approval

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that the Union Cabinet has approved the second phase of Pune Metro Rail Project: Vanaj to Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), which is an extension of the existing Vanaj-Ramwadi corridor under Phase I. These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and will include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs like Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi. The project is targeted to be completed within four years. The estimated project cost is Rs 3626.24 crore, which will be shared equally by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra and external bilateral/multilateral agencies.
