Fake Sim: Now there is no mercy for those who buy fake SIM cards! AI will block the number

The Department of Telecommunications ( DoT ) has intensified its campaign to crack down on fake SIM card holders in India . Now ' AI Shield' will be used for SIM card verification, for which a new ecosystem has been developed.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has intensified its campaign to crack down on fake SIM card holders in India. Now 'AI Shield' will be used for SIM card verification for which a new ecosystem has been developed. The Department of Telecommunications has said that with this new technology it will be impossible to buy SIM cards through fake documents and this AI Shield will also keep the users' SIM cards safe.

The Department of Telecommunications shared this information through its X (formerly Twitter) handle. In its post, DoT said, "India's AI Shield against SIM Fraud. To combat misuse of mobile SIMs through fake or forged documents, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has developed ( ASTR ) (Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition powered Solution for Telecom SIM Subscriber Verification) which is making India's telecom ecosystem safer, smarter and fraud resistant. It's not just technology, it's trust, transparency and security in action."

What is ASTR? How will AI Shield work?

The Department of Telecommunications has claimed that ASTR is a tool that is equipped with a solution based on face recognition through Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this, telecom subscribers will be verified through the facial verification of the user. This method will prove to be very effective in preventing increasing cyber fraud.

If someone has got a SIM card issued through fake documents, then the AI based face recognition feature will verify that document. If the document is not verified, the SIM card will be blocked immediately.

In this way, the subscriber database will be checked through this new AI tool. All SIM cards that are being used with fake documents will be blocked.

More than 4.2 crore fake SIM cards have already been blocked

Recently, the Department of Telecommunications informed that more than 4.2 crore SIM cards involved in cyber crime have been blocked. Using these SIM cards, users were cheated through calls or messages. The Department of Telecommunications investigated the numbers reported through the Sanchar Sathi portal and blocked them.

This new AI Shield system will make India's digital transactions more secure which will help in protecting common people from online fraud.
