Devshayani Ekadashi: What should be done if Ekadashi fast is broken?

There are 24 Ekadashi dates in a year, out of which Devshayani Ekadashi is considered special because after this date , the Lord goes to sleep for 4 months.

Devshayani Ekadashi fast is on 6th July 2025, it is considered very special among all Ekadashi because from this day Lord Vishnu is going into Yog Nidra for 4 months. During this time, it is forbidden to do any auspicious work in the world. The reason is that Chaturmas will be in place for 4 months due to the absence of Lord Vishnu. There is a law to observe fast and worship on this day. It is believed that those who observe fast etc. with true devotion on this day get auspicious results. When is Devshayani Ekadashi fast?

According to the Panchang, the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month will start on 5th July at 06.58 pm, which will last till 09.14 pm on 6th July. In Hinduism, Udaya Tithi is recognized for all auspicious dates. In such a situation, Devshayani Ekadashi will be celebrated on 06th July.

What to do if the fast is broken accidentally?

• If you have broken the Ekadashi fast by mistake, do not panic. First of all, take a bath again with full clothes, then anoint the idol of Lord Vishnu with Panchamrit made of milk, curd, honey and sugar. After this, perform Shodashopachar Puja of Shri Hari Lord Vishnu.
• Now you should ask for forgiveness from Lord Vishnu, go to the place of worship and chant the mantra given below and pray that the Lord overlooks the mistake you have committed and helps you in completing the fast. 

Avahanam na janami na janami visarjanam.

Pooja Chaiva Na Janami Khamsva Parmeshwar.
Without mantra, without action, without devotion, Janardan.
Yaptujitam Maya Dev! In perfect harmony.

• Apart from this, if the fast is broken, chant the twelve-lettered mantra of Lord Vishnu 'Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay' with a Tulsi rosary as per your ability. After this, you can also perform havan of one rosary.
