The army is still silent.

The Myanmar military has not yet made any official statement on the attack. However, local residents and rebels are describing it as a revenge attack. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted the government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. While people initially responded with peaceful protests, the country has since been rocked by military crackdowns, arrests and violent incidents.

Rebels who turned to arms

The way the army has moved forward to suppress the protests has led the rebels to take up arms. The country is currently embroiled in a civil war. Every day, civilians are being killed somewhere. This attack shows how dire the situation is in Myanmar. Buddhist monasteries that provide shelter to refugees are also becoming targets of bullets. Human rights organizations are demanding an international investigation into the incident.
