On June 16, 2025, the Pakistani government shocked the people by increasing petrol by Rs. 4.80 and diesel by Rs. 7.95. Thelatest increase in petrol and diesel prices came into effect on July 1.With the latest increase, the price of petrol has increased by Rs. 8.36 per liter. The current increased prices have come into effect as per the recommendations of
OGRA and the relevant ministries. The government has attributed this increase to price changes in the international market. However, the strange thing is that crude oil prices in the international market have been decreasing. Prices have decreased as tensions in West Asia have eased. But Pakistan is convincing the people that international conditions are the reason for the increase in prices.
Another blow with carbon levy Along with increasing these prices, the Shehbaz Sharif government has taken another key decision to break the hearts of the people. It has announced that it will imposea carbon levy of Rs. 2.50
per liter on petrol and diesel. PDL on petrol and PDL on diesel have been imposed at a carbon levy of Rs. 74.51. However, although these are not separate taxes, they will cause a huge hole in the pockets of consumers in the neighboring country. The people of Pakistan are angry with the Shehbaz Sharif government over the recent increase in fuel prices.
