Sugar Mill: Crores of sugar mill water due to drainage threat

A horrific incident took place on Sunday night in Haryana, home toAsia's largestsugar mill . Due to illegal encroachment of land next tothe municipal drainage canal, the canal overflowed due to heavy rain and water entered the mill premises. The sugar stored in the godown was destroyed by this water flow. Officials said that the loss was estimated to be Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 crore. The Saraswati Sugar Mill in Yamunanagar has a storage of about 2.20 lakh quintals of sugar. The value of this is about Rs. 97 crore. However, due to the rain that fell after midnight on Sunday, water flowed into the mill godown. In this context, 40 percent of the stored sugar was completely lost, mill officials revealed.

Unforeseen danger

Sugar mill general manager Rajiv Mishra said, "This is the first time we have faced such a development. This is the first time that flood water has entered the godown to this extent. Only after a full inspection will the actual extent of the damage be understood."

Negligence and illegal construction are the reasons

Due to illegal constructions near the drainage canal, rainwater got blocked and rushed towards the mill. An investigation revealed that this incident happened due to the negligence of the authorities so far. Locals are demanding that the municipal authorities respond to this.

Security measures are required

Industrial owners are demanding that steps be taken to protect such properties from heavy rains. There are growing calls for the government and municipal departments to work together to focus on the drainage system and take action.
